I think a LOS rule that gives you line of sight directly through a "obstructing" square when you are arranged diagonally with your target but not when you are arranged left-right or up-down is broken because it introduces too much arbitrariness into the game. Why does the game need more confusion? Why not just say that you can walk through water squares diagonally but not any other way? Or we can only used ranged weapons diagonally? We could certainly "learn" those rules, too. And you could certainly "play" the game with those (or any) rules. But they introduce an arbitrary abstract requirement that will detract from the enjoyment of the game as you play. The whole game is not broken. But, I think, the LOS rules are.
