Towers of Ruin is standalone. The only standalone sets are:Thunderstone
Thunderstone: Dragonspire
Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
I'd definitely recommend starting with the Advance series, and only getting the older ones if you really find yourself wanting more cards.
