After two TNG releases, a handful of TNG promos, and now a TOS release, I have noticed a glaring omission: an absence of positive mother figures.
WESLEY CRUSHER: Hold on, Tribble! There are two versions of my mother, and both of them reflect her kind and caring nature!
TRIBBLE OF BORG: Shut up, Wesley!
Now, Guinan may not have been known for her cookies and milk, but this good-natured mother of an unspecified "lot" of children was always ready with a listening ear, just like Mom. Such is the nature of El-Aurians, after all. Alas, however, although we now have three Datas and three Worfs, we still have seen no sign of Guinan.
On the other hand, consider Deana Troi, whom they were obliged to include. True, nobody looks at Deana the way they look at their mother, but she did give birth to that alien in "The Child". In her role as ship counselor, one of her duties was to help people understand themselves better and maintain morale. Remind you of Mom? How about the way her card sees right through you, undermines your best efforts, and keeps your most treasured goals out of reach? Ouch! And, of course, everyone's least favorite mother (including Deana's) is present in the Premiere Edition, and she does much the same thing.
Enter the TOS expansion. I'm sure that I am not the only one wondering: "Where is Amanda Grayson?" This wonderful woman lived on a world where emotion and affection were poor taste without losing any of her warmth and human caring, overflowing with genuine pride in her son who could never tell her he loved her. (That scene in "The Naked Time" really gets to me.) Does she not deserve a place in this DBG?
Please, all of you at Bandai, I urge you: Call your mothers, tell them you love them, and send them some flowers with flowery cards. Then, get these two great characters in the game!
