I've had this game for a little while and my first attempt to learn/play it left me a little underwhlemed. Last weekend I decided it give it a second chance and I'm glad I did. Wonderful game and I'm hooked - I've been looking forward to getting home from work and doing a turn or two every day this week.

That said. It can be difficult for new players to know just how well they are doing in the midgame and to know whether they got off to a good start in Day/Night 1.

What are your benchmarks for telling whether you have a shot at good winning or not when the game is only half over? What are your short-term goals that you try to achieve every turn regardless of the order of the cards and what the mana rolls give you?

I'm doing the following, but would love to refine it a bit, taking advantage of your experience.

Each turn:
advance at least one level
max out the number of recruited Units
explore/expose at least one terrain counter; try for two
at least one crystal added to my Inventory

Benchmarks/Milestones:
Locate all cities by end of Night 2
At least two spells in deck by end of Night 2; mana to
power them waiting in inventory
More than half of units are gold by end of Day 3

What level are most people at by the time they hit Day/Night 3? I find I'm going in at level 5, but I have a feeling that's too low and that there are big advantages to being at 6 by then.
