Review: Gloomhaven: Forgotten Circles:: Thoughts after a game with the expansion

Hi guys! I just played the first scenario of the new campaign and wanna share some thoughts.

My group already finished the core campaign and we thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I have to confess that the first scenario was very far from promising to the point that I'm not sure if we're going to continue at all. The reasons could be as follows:

1) It's not fun to be the one who plays the new character. Despite her beauty and interesting skills, I did not enjoy playing her as much as I expected. Partly is because one of the things I love about Gloomhaven is the role-playing aspect. The characters all have obscure backgrounds which allows you put your imagination to work. The expansion forced me to be an NPC for the others and it's surprisingly boring.

2) Hidden rooms and monsters turns out to be a bad idea. When I was playing the core campaign, I sometimes nitpicked about the scenario book letting you see what monsters you would face and in which rooms they would appear. The expansion tried to fix this issue but it turns out that it's too time-consuming to find monster cards and tiles again during the game and also very disrupting the flow. I feel sorry for Isaac because this change probably resulted from the players' feedback. It kinda confirms the saying that customers don't always know best and you don't always change things based on what they say.

To disclaim, it's just one game so you probably shouldn't care about what I said that much. But we really really enjoyed the core campaign and it's extremely disappointing that now we're not feeling the same with the new one.

English is not my native language so sorry for any mistakes made!

Cheers,
Toon
