My group has started to tweak the game in a few different ways and one of them was to just expand the employee pool to account for this very issue. Instead of just drawing 2 each Upgrade Step we reveal 4 and then immediately refill any that get hired with another one from the deck.We've also toyed with having two monsters of each level, with both revealing at once and the players having to decide individually which monster they'll send their Hero to attack. Both monsters' abilities effect all Heroes each round but only the one you attack takes damage if you hit so it adds just that much more challenge to the mix and also extends the game. We don't always play this variant, usually only if we are in the mood for a longer game where there's more chance to develop unique shop builds.
