Bit late to answer this, but since you are still looking in here... :)

By the way, have you ever tried playing solo, with two decks (ie just like two players playing) but each deck is 33/66 two sphere. In other words all the spheres are there, but in one third/two third proportions for each of the two decks.

Yep. Did this recently to try my 2-player decks (which are both 2-sphere) against it. You just need a big enough table and make sure you keep switching the first player marker around (I usually put it on top of the threat counter, so I do not forget it :)).

So for example you have one third Tactics and one hero, and two thirds Lore and two lore heroes in one deck, and similar proportions for Spirit and leadership in the other. Would that work, or would it mean you'd never get the big hitters out for some spheres?

Not only does it work well, it is by far superior to mono-sphere decks.

With the right combination of heroes, you will have no trouble getting the cards out (you have to stay away from adding tons of high-cost cards to your deck, though), and you simply have more options available and can make use of the specialties of all four spheres.

Having some Lore healing around is definitely very beneficial for a Tactics deck, for example.
