I played this quest the other day. I'd say that if the heroes have proved strong enough to quickly kill larger monsters, you're better off swarming the level with enough small critters to overwhelm the heroes and carry off the rune key before they can reach the portals.

To that end, I used kobolds, razorwings and shades. They can all go through heroes, so they just flood the central room, with a protective layer of minions around a core of master monsters.

In the first half of Masquerade Ball, I'd set up two Demons in the front room, since I'd never used them before. They of course got obliterated first turn, even though two of the heroes rolled X's, so I haven't really had much luck with the bigger monsters, other than some early success with a Shadow Dragon.

Kobolds have been amazing, though now they've learned not to even bother killing the master kobolds, instead just scooting by them.
