I keep trying to create a simple rule that solves some of these problems, but I always end up with weird corner cases that don't make sense.

My rule's starting point is always, "line-of-sight cannot go through the corner of a space that is touched by a wall, either the corner of a wall or the open end of a wall." That seems to solve a big chunk of problems with a number of examples I've seen.

However, it would conflict with the following rule in some circumstances,
However, if the line only touches the corner of a blocked space (without passing through the space itself ), the target space is in line of sight."

But, it seems natural to also want to say that lines of sight cannot start or end at the corner of a space that is touched by a wall, either the corner of a wall or the open end of a wall. There are cases where that makes perfect sense and other cases where it becomes nonsensical.
