Thanks to Rob for replying so quickly and hopefully putting this to rest. To counterattack, you must be Stalwart, or be given Stalwart through two supporting units.

Ben,
Stalwart is the key unless an ability spells it out explicitly.
The two support units technically grant you the stalwart keyword so all of the instances you mention require the attacked unit to be stalwart.
I will let you know if I can think of any exceptions.
