Not to dissuade you from a decision made, but :)
I have Talisman and Runebound, and while my boys and I like them both I think Runebound is going to have a bit more staying power with us.
I noticed with RB that you can't get most of the expansions with it anymore--but I came to the conclusion after reading here (and now after playing) that I'll be happy even if nothing else comes out. For one thing, most of the expansions seem to just change the events/storylines, and we play mostly for the loot! Comparing to Talisman, I think we all like overland exploration aspect more than the the round-and-round a track as well. I would like to get the expansions that supplement the market deck, but there's a lot in there already.
I do have my eye on at least one of the big expansions that are still out there, probably Sands.
I don't think you can go wrong either way, have fun and good luck!

I will give thought to what you're saying. New products, while always welcome with an adventure game, isn't the make-or-break point with me. But there's got to be enough availability of existing Runebound product to give me enough variety for a long-term game satisfaction. If there's a lot not available now, I have to ask myself how much more might not be available before I could get it purchased?
The big box expansions do a nice job of expanding on the basic Runebound game play and make for an overall better game. Mists, Frozen Wastes, and Sands are all better games then the base. Honestly if you just bought the base game and the above three I think you are looking at a good system. I also enjoy the Isle of Dread but it does play very much like the base game that if you don't find it I wouldn't worry about it.
The downside of all the non-base big boxes is a limited number of encounter cards. It doesn't take long to cycle those decks. It would have been nice had they had expansions for those. Still for me the answer is just to put any big box that is feeling stale away for awhile.
If you can find the small card deck expansions they are at least worth $10 or so. I did pay some big buck for a few of mine but none of them really wow'ed me. If I had to do it again I probably would't have passed on any of the high priced ones. The item decks are nice but adding all of them does make the deck a bit insanely sized. Some of the new items are rarely picked in most games I play - banners, familiars, rituals.
If I were just getting into the game now I would probably try that store link someone gave above and buy as much as I could get for the normal prices and keep my eye out for reasonable auctions on the other ones. Also, trying to find old stuff like this always gives one a reason to do some road trips to other gaming stores, which can be fun on its own.
