I have been playing the game for a while with Clerical Errors and Unnatural Axe, and up to this point, this is the way I have played Hirelings: All they do is allow you to carry one extra big item. They can also allow you to use a Siege Engine, even if you have no hands left. However, I've been reading and hearing things lately that hint at the possibility that they might do more than that. Do they?

This is sort of a difficult question, as it depends on what printing you have and also what other sets you might be playing with. But in the most basic version, that's all a Hireling does. It does say carry AND USE though, not just carry.

Later/other sets included different versions of Hirelings (Sidekicks/Mooks/Minions), and these also had new rules for them, including a way to sacrifice them to get an automatic escape. The Siege Engine's text was also changed in newer versions. But yeah, you're basically correct.

If you can be a bit more specific as to what "things" you've heard, maybe I can help some more ^^
