Shields are not exhausted to add the printed defense dice. These become a part of your defense pool. Shields are exhausted for their written abilities.
For example: Shield of the Dark God plus Defense Training using your sequence.
1) defense dice rolled (trigger condition 1)
2) Shield exhausted to reroll defense dice (trigger condition 2)
3) Defensive Training is tapped instead of shield
4) defense dice rerolled per shield ability (trigger condition 1)
5) Shield exhausted to reroll defense dice
No. You're #2 and #3 above contradict each other. In #2 yousay you exhausted the shield for its abilities and then, in #3, that you instead exhaust DT. You have to actually exhaust the shield to actually use the shield's abilities. Exhausting DT instead just saves the shield (and it's abilities) for a later attack before your next turn. Exhausting DT doesn't give you the shield's abilities.
