Once activated, the damage and effects of an ultimate cannot be prevented. Before it's activated, it can, by stopping it from activating. It's pretty cut and dry that there's two different game states in existence - pre-activated ultimate and activated ultimate - and both states have different rules conditions. The state of the game at the moment the rules apply is incredibly relevant and exists in pretty much every other game. Various rules apply differently during different game states.
Well, a few posts ago, I was getting some understanding for my confusion.
And now we're reverting to defending the rule book and lecturing me about board game basics.
